Design of Screw Jack
This was another academic project that I did during my Bachelor studies in the course of Design of Mechanical Systems. The project dealt with designing a power screw. I designed & modeled the components of a screw jack. Power screws are used to convert rotary motion into reciprocating motion. This can be used to produce a lifting force that is amplified through the screw threads and the cantilever action of the handle. Thus screw jack is used for a variety of lifting and holding applications ranging from cars in garages to buildings with multiple jacks. A lifting jack was first designed by Leonardo da Vinci in the late 1400s who demonstrated the use of a screw jack for lifting loads using a threaded worm gear that was supported in bearings and rotated by turning the worm shaft to drive a lifting screw to move the load. Design of a power screw is based on the stresses developed in its constituent parts. A power screw is subjected to an axial load and a turning moment. For the design consideration the load and the height to which the load is to be lifted is defined. With this and knowledge of the stress acting in the nut, screw & handle, a screw jack was designed & later modeled in SOLIDWORKS.
